thrum

thrum thrum thrum

the overhead fan slices through the bedroom darkness

and what i think of

what i see

what keeps awake the heart of me

is not

is what i do not

is what i do not have

patience

time

those more material things that still matter like

money

money

a job

see above

what calms my heart

is

is what i do

is what i do have

my sweet wife

an identity

those more material things that still matter like

a home

a nice shirt or three

enough food that i only go hungry when

lazy

or

i forget to eat

and yet,

thrum thrum thrum

as the overhead fan slices through the dark

and i think of what i do not have,

and i think of what i do not have

because what i do not have

is what i see

what keeps awake the heart of me
